"Alaska Airlines is Cookin' " General notes- (date unspecified)

 The book itself-

This book specifically is on loan to me, as well as one other Alaskan community cookbook. This one specifically was an easy first choice to archive, since I have a bit of a time limit on how long I have with the book itself.

This post will be about the general condition of the book, its sections, table of contents, and other interesting bits of data about it that are not recipes.

A comb-bound cookbook, with a blue card stock cover, emblazoned with the title: "Alaska Airlines is Cookin' " along with a graphic of a passenger airliner emblazoned with the 1970s era Alaska airlines logo that depicts an Alaska Native wearing a fur parka.

The book itself is in moderate condition, curled from use and improper storage with yellowish discoloration and fading of the cover and pages, a common issue with community cookbooks.

The first page in particular has issues directly relating to the notice sticker stuck on its reverse side, a yellowed rectangle from the chemical composition of the sticker's adhesive.

On the rear side of the first page is a sticker that says:

            NOTICE:
Alaska Airlines, Inc. has not been involved in the editing
assembly or publication of this cookbook and there-
fore disclaims any and all responsibility or liability for
the accuracy, source or satisfaction of the contents of
the cookbook. The publication of the cookbook is a
private venture of the individuals who contributed to its
publication and it has no connection whatsoever with
Alaska Airlines, Inc. other than the permission granted
to use the Alaska Airlines name and logo.

This puts it firmly in the camp of an employee-produced community cookbook.

The table of contents is simple, and yes, does spell seafood as "Seafoods"

The reverse of this page has a table titled "Favorite recipes from my cookbook" with  recipe name, section, and page number columns. It is not filled out, though there are annotations elsewhere in the book.

The recipes all state who submitted the recipe and what section of the company they worked with, often shortened with acronyms.

The cookbook looks to have been reproduced via mimeograph, with the original likely typewritten via typewriter using the "stencil" mode and stenciling paper.

The cookbook itself is 125 pages, with a supplementary section that looks to be part of the kit used to produce the covers and binding. It begins with a blue page that includes a section titled "23 years of dates on which Easter Sunday falls" starting in 1972, which may be a probable publication date, but it is not specified anywhere in the text itself, so this could be younger than that.

The supplementary pages are of a very thin, cream-colored paper, with printing done in either light brown or blue ink.

The pages include a:
guide for measurements
table of substitutions
"weights and measures"
seasoning guide
guide to can sizes
illustrated guide to types of flatware
guide to types of cooking knives
"table of equivalents"
"timetable for roasting turkeys"
"suggestions for meat cookery"
meat carving diagrams
meat roasting time and temperature chart
meat storage guide
deep fat frying chart
buffet arrangement diagram
cheese guide
common terms used in recipes page
page on house plants most likely to succeed
spot removal guide
and
an advertisement for the publishing company that printed and bound the book, a " the Walter's Publishing Company, R.F.D."
